π¨URGENT: 47,000 new homes in san diego at risk - act now!ποΈ
or watch your rent skyrocket to the point where san diego is not affordable
edit: the original piece erroneously claimed that 47,000 new units were all for hillcrest, when it wasnβt! it was an error from my part, and it has been corrected.
tl;dr: we've got mere hours to flood city council with support for more housing in hillcrest. nimbys are out in force. if we don't act now, we're screwed.
deadline: TOMORROW, july 30, 8 am for public comments. full agenda here.
listen up, housing warriors! π‘β
this isn't a drill. it's do or die time for hillcrest's housing future.
right now, as you're reading this, nimbys are working overtime to kill plans for 47,000 new homes near ucsd and hillcrest. yeah, you read that right - FORTY-SEVEN THOUSAND.
why should you care?
itβs very simple: more homes = lower rent. it's econ 101, baby.
but if we sit on our hands, here's what we're looking at:
skyrocketing rent π (think $3000+ for a 1-bedroom)
more homelessness π’ (san diego's unhoused population grew by 10% last year)
young folks and working families priced out π (goodbye diversity!)
a less vibrant, less diverse hillcrest π (say hello to boring, homogeneous neighborhoods)
sound like a nightmare? then let's wake up and DO something!
your mission to make hillcrest strong
here's your mission (should you choose to accept it... and you better!):
go to this form: https://sandiego.gov/city-clerk/agenda-comment-form
fill it out TWICE (once for hillcrest, once for university city)
use these deets:
date: 7/30/2024
select: "city council comment"
item: 600 (hillcrest) or 601 (university cpu)
pour your heart out! tell 'em why we need more housing. get personal. get passionate. get pissed!
here are some sample messages to get you going:
for hillcrest (item 600): "I strongly support the Hillcrest plan amendment. As a [resident/worker/frequent visitor] in Hillcrest, I've seen firsthand how the housing shortage affects our community. this plan will allow for 47,000 new homes, which is crucial for keeping Hillcrest alive and vibrant. More housing near transit and jobs will reduce traffic, support local businesses, and help us meet our climate goals. Please approve this plan for a more inclusive and sustainable Hillcrest! So many people want this to happen!"
for university city (Item 601): "I urge you to approve the University City Community Plan Update. This plan is essential for addressing the severe housing shortage near UCSD and major job centers. By allowing for more homes near transit, we can reduce traffic, create more affordable housing options for students and workers, and build a more sustainable community. The 47,000 new homes this plan allows for are desperately needed. Please vote yes on this plan to ensure University City remains accessible and vibrant for generations (and students) to come."
if you wanna be a lilβ extraβ¦
bonus round (for the overachievers):
show up at city hall tomorrow at 1 pm. bring friends. bring signs. bring your loudest voice.
can't make it? zoom in: https://sandiego.zoomgov.com/j/1607807743
blow up your council member's phone. find their number and contact information here.
remember: every. single. voice. counts. your comment could be the one that tips the scales.
so what's it gonna be, housing hero? are you gonna let nimbys decide hillcrest's fate? or are you gonna fight for a hillcrest where everyone can afford to live?
the clock's ticking. let's make some noise.
for a hillcrest that welcomes all!

p.s. share this email like your rent depends on it. because, well, it kinda does.
If I didnβt have a flight I would so be there. If Iβm off the plane and in service Iβll zoom in
Thank you!!!
